Rafizi to meet AG over assets

Rafizi Ramli sent a letter to Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail yesterday, demanding letters of authority regarding his accounts and companies.
PETALING JAYA: PKR’s Rafizi Ramli will meet with Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail once the latter prepares the letters of authority that would allow the Pandan MP to scrutinize his assets and accounts.
This was in light of former CID chief Mat Zain Ibrahim’s allegations that Gani had accepted bribes to ensure Malaysia lost the territorial dispute for Batu Puteh Island to Singapore in 2008.
“The information (from Gani’s accounts) are the minimum I need to confirm no money was channeled into the account in Hong Kong as claimed in (Mat Zain’s) statutory declaration,” said Rafizi at a press conference at the party headquarters here today.
“I am ready to collect the letters at any place and any time once it has been finalized by Tan Sri. I am confident that his openness will be an example to all government officers faced by accusations of corruption.”
In a letter addressed to Abdul Gani yesterday, Rafizi listed out five letters of authority he needed from the attorney-general.
The letters would allow Rafizi to examine Abdul Gani and his immediate family’s identification details; as well as information from Bank Negara, Companies Commission Malaysia and Hong Kong authorities regarding his companies and bank accounts in Malaysia and Hong Kong.
Rafizi said he would also leave for Hong Kong in January next year, with or without Abdul Gani’s permission.
In Mat Zain’s statutory declaration, the former top cop quoted Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, a prominent Umno lawyer as saying “you will not believe your eyes if you were to see the amount of cash that was transferred into Gani’s account in Hong Kong”.
Shafee however had since distanced himself from the allegation made by Mat Zain.
On Wednesday, Abdul Gani, who has denied the accusations, said he was prepared to give Rafizi the letter of authority to check his bank accounts in any country, including Hong Kong.
“He can come to my office at any time to get the letter,” Abdul Gani told Bernama.
