Soi Lek says he's retiring, will stay out of MCA polls

MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek confirmed today that he will stick to his promise to keep out of the party elections later this month.

The promise was made on May 6, a day after the 13th general election, as a way of taking responsibility for MCA's failure to improve on its electoral performance.

NONEChua said he was under pressure from his supporters to enter the fray, for they believe a four-cornered contest will weigh in his favour.

He will keep to his promise, Chua said, in order to be an honourable leader who knows how to seize opportunities to be promoted and yet have the wisdom to step down when the time is right.
"I want to retire with integrity and credibility. Even if I win in this coming party election, I will lose my credibility and integrity and it will become an empty victory.
"As a man of my words, I want to retire holding my head high," he said.
The contest for the MCA presidency now revolves around Liow Tiong Lai, Gan Ping Sieu and Ong Tee Keat.
Supporters told not to give up
Chua said he has not given up on MCA and BN and would continue to contribute in whatever way he could, despite his retirement, and that his supporters should continue working for the party.
"A lot of my supporters have indicated that they want to retire together with me. However, many of my comrades have the potential and talent to contribute. I hope they will continue with their paths in politics," he said.
Meanwhile, Chua also urged party delegates to shun bribes from businessmen out to interfere with the party election.
"This only serves to devalue the new leadership. The future of MCA cannot be restricted  by some selfish veterans, or be controlled by some businessmen with hidden agendas.
"I hope our MCA delegates are wise. I urge all of you to stand firm and say 'no' to these various means that will cause great harm to the party," he added.
