Stop misleading on assessment hike, Ku Nan told

The recent rash of contradictory statements from the government about the assessment hike in Kuala Lumpur have left ratepayers scratching their head.

The latest is Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor telling ratepayers to "throw away" their notices as a letter should have been issued first about the assessment hike.

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok (right) said whether KL residents were informed by the assessment hike through a letter or notice made no difference.

However, she added that the minister's statement had given the impression that ratepayers no longer needed to file their objections which in fact must still be done before Dec 17 this year.

"If residents do not make their objections then the rate will be gazetted and they will have to pay the new rate," she said when contacted.

She warned the public not to be misled and to continue filing their objections before the deadline.

Mayor silent 

Kok said Tengku Adnan should allow the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to do its job instead of adding to the confusion.

"The Mayor has been totally silent while Tengku Adnan is doing all the talking.

"The minister is not being briefed properly by his consultants and legal advisors and is confusing all of us," she said.

On Thursday, Tengku Adnan had contradicted his own deputy, insisting that the revision of the assessment rate was not being deferred to March.

He stressed that the new rate will be effective from January as scheduled.
