WANITA UMNO ASSEMBLY Wanita Umno head Shahrizat Abdul Jalil wants the party and government to give more roles to women either in government or government-linked companies (GLCs) and state Umno liaison committee, and also projects.
Iin her speech, she also said women are now capable as they are equipped with degrees.
Shahrizat (left) said at present most projects are given mainly to men and asked whether Wanita are not qualified.
“When it comes to projects, they will say you from Wanita Umno ke? Sorry lah tak boleh (Sorry cannot) but when it comes to others, woooh...”.
Shahrizat in her one-hour plus speech said that, when it comes to party work in Umno divisions and branches, they would look for Wanita, but in other matters, they would shy away.
“Umno’s struggle and strength is due to Wanita and hence, a greater role should be given to Wanita.
“I will not give up until this is met. Aren’t we qualified to be secretary or treasurer in state umno liaison committees?” she said.
“Aren’t women qualified to hold post as directors or chairpersons in GLCs?” she asked, to applause from delegates.
For this term, she wants to see a political transformation in Umno where women are given a greater role.
She reminded that Wanita are not merely party workers but can contribute more to the party and country.
Shahrizat said this in his speech at the Wanita Umno assembly today.
A total of 955 Wanita delegates are participating in the 2013 Umno general assembly.

Speaking fresh after defending her Wanita Umno post and after she settled her RM100 million lawsuit against Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli and Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin, Shahrizat said she also does not want to see the women’s wing to be seen as a competitor to the Puteri movement.
She said either wing should not be seen as competitors but work together for the betterment of the party.

She further warned branch and division leaders not to influence the wing and said she knows division leaders who want to meddle in its affairs.
“We are women and are bright enough to choose our leaders. Hence, do not meddle in our affairs and we will not meddle in yours.”
‘Opposition are not invincible’
In her speech, Shahrizat also pointed out that the recent 13th general election shows that the opposition are not invincible and wanted the party to target to recapture the opposition-held states in the 14th general election.
“Umno/BN has managed to recapture Kedah and we have successfully defended Perak. I am certain that if we concentrate on our efforts we can recapture other states.
“Who says the opposition is invincible as Kedah is proof of this. BN can regain control of the opposition-held states. The opposition only unite in elections whereas in other periods they quarrel,” she said, adding that the results of the election shows Malays and bumiputera need Umno.
She also trained her sights on PAS, which she claims had come up with a decree that women should not contest in polls, however now they have followed Umno in putting up female candidates.
This, she said shows that women if given the role can be at par with their male counterparts and Umno Wanita had paved the way for a greater role of women in politics.
In the last general election, Shahrizat said Wanita Umno contested in 10 parliamentary seats and 32 states seats.
“We have won eight parliamentary seats and 22 state seats. Wanita Umno has also helped ensure Umno increased its share when the party won 88 seats, which accounts for 66 per cent of the seats won by BN,” she said.
'Najib the strategist and reformer'
Shahrizat, who is also the special adviser on women’s affairs to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, also heaped praise on the Umno president for about five minutes of her speech.
She said Najib seems to be quiet but he has been a good strategist and had charted the country to greater progress.
“He in unlike an empty tin, like some of the opposition leaders. His actions are louder than his words,” she said.
“He is brave to bring about change and some of it is outside the box in his own way. Malaysia is fortunate to get realistic and stable leaders, unlike the opposition who make a lot of noise. The last general election shows the electorate still wants Umno and BN and Najib’s leadership.”
