Penang renames promenade after Karpal

A promenade in Jelutong will be named Persiaran Karpal Singh in honour of the late Bukit Gelugor MP who died in a road accident on Thursday.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng announced this today.

The 800m seafront walkway in Sungai Pinang is also near where DAP's 'water Ubah' mascot is located.

Karpal was Jelutong MP for two decades, a tenure that earned him the nicknamed 'Tiger of Jelutong'.

Speaking to reporters at Karpal's home in Jalan Utama, Lim said the promenade will be known as 'Karpal Singh Drive' or 'Persiaran Karpal Singh'.

The matter will be presented in the upcoming exco meeting, he said.

Karpal's widow thankful

Addressing the media for the first time since the death, Karpal's widow Gurmit Kaur thanked the state for the honour.

"I'm more certain the appreciation will make not only my beloved husband YB Karpal proud to be a Penangite but also make me and my family proud," she said.

She also expressed gratitude to the state for honouring him by lowering the Penang flag to half mast and assisting with arrangements for the state funeral at Dewan Sri Pinang tomorrow.

Separately, the DAP announced that it is organising for 1,000 bicycles, 100 superbikes and an Ubah truck to escort the funeral procession.

Karpal, 74, and aide Michael Cornelius, 39, died in a road accident at 1.10am en route Penang from Kuala Lumpur.

The DAP stalwart first entered the Dewan Rakyat in 1974 as the representative for Alor Setar, before holding the Jelutong seat for five terms.

He became Bukit Gelugor MP in 2004 when the parliamentary constituency was created.
