The Selangor government has completed its takeover of two of the biggest private companies which control treated water services in the state.
The takeover of Puncak Niaga Sdn Bhd (PNSB) and Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) is part of its aim to bring the lucrative but problematic industry back under public control.
Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali said the takeover was completed after state-controlled corporation Air Selangor bought over shares in both companies.
PNSB manages a majority of the more than 30 water treatment plants in Selangor while Syabas is responsible for managing the treated water distribution system.
Azmin said following the takeover, the state government would focus on reducing the high rate of non-revenue water (NRW), which was the amount of water lost through leakage and theft.
Previous reports have put the Selangor water industry’s NRW rate at 33%, meaning it loses 33 out of every 100 units of treated water it produces.
