Popular satirical cartoonist Zunar has hit out at politicians who are offended by his art, telling them that he is merely using their allegedly corrupt actions as inspiration for his cartoons.
Zunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee Anwar Ulhaque, said political leaders should stop corrupt practices and abuse of power if they cannot accept criticism through cartoons.
"For everyone's information, whatever I draw, the ideas come from politicians in Malaysia. What they do, I draw. It is not my fault. I am not the one who created corruption for them, no.
"They are the ones who are corrupt. I cartoon them. So don't blame me in this matter. The scandals do not come from the cartoonist, but from the leaders themselves.
"If they want me to stop drawing cartoons, leaders have to stop all corruption and resign from their positions if they are afraid of cartoonists. Let cartoonists become the politicians then. Shouldn't it be like that," he said in a press conference at his office in Kuala Lumpur today.
This comes after reports that Zunar is being investigated under Section 4 of the Sedition Act over his book "Komplot Penjarakan Anwar".
The cartoonist is to be called for questioning soon.
