It was an emotional moment for Umno’s Kok Lanas assemblyperson Md Alwi Che Ahmad, who was the first opposition lawmaker to debate the Hudud Bill in the Kelantan state assembly this morning.
Unable to hold back tears, the Kelantan Umno information chief said amid sobs that the implementation of hudud law was necessary to serve God.
In a rare display of bipartisanship, the entire opposition bench stated its support for the state government's Bill to amend the Syariah Criminal Code (II) Enactment 1993.
Umno has 12 seats in the Kelantan state assembly.
Md Alwi said Kelantan Umno would help the state government face "all obstacles" in implementing hudud law.
"I support hudud because of Allah. Umno supports it because of Allah, not because of politics. We will face the challenges together.
"Our opponents, from many groups, are trying to stop us. I am worried about obstacles the state government will face. Let's face it together," he added.
Md Alwi said that no one had the right to object to the implementation of Islamic criminal law.
"Hudud is above politics. Those who see it as a political ploy are committing a big offence. All Muslims must support hudud. Whether it is implemented or not, is secondary," he added.
Ignore the busybodies
Hitting out at non-Muslims who question and criticise the Kelantan government's bid to implement hudud law in the state, he said there were numerous "busybodies" despite the fact that the law cannot be applied on non-Muslims.
"But they (non-Muslims) want to bring the matter to court and say that it is against the Federal Constitution," he added.
Citing Acheh as an example, Md Alwi said the Indonesian province had implemented Islamic criminal law following a major calamity and Kelantan should do the same.
"Acheh faced a major tsunami 10 years ago. We faced major floods during the same month (December) last year. Have you not realised this?
"Are you not ready to repent? What kind of a human are you?" he added choking with emotion.
He nevertheless admitted that Allah tests His servants with calamities to "unite our hearts". - M'kini
