A cynical Dr Mahathir said that during his time, Umno did not have red shirts, like those worn by the 170 division chiefs who had attended a closed-door briefing on Sunday with current party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
"I saw all red shirts. Red is a sign they support. The prime minister must meet the Umno members, that is the work of the prime minister, “ he said cynically after a Perdana Leadership event in Putrajaya today.
The country’s longest serving prime minister also said when compared to his time, there was more unity in Umno now.
"Formerly there was no solidarity, even Musa challenged me,” he said referring to the former deputy prime minister Tun Musa Hitam.
The controversial 1MDB scandal were among the topics discussed in the meeting yesterday, which was also to show the division chiefs solidarity with Najib’ who has come under attack over his leadership of the country.
Najib had told the division chiefs that the company's accounts had gone through a forensic audit by accounting firm Deloitte Malaysia, which found no traces of fraud, cheating and misappropriation of funds in the company's accounts.
