Dancer Bilqis Hijjas today pleaded not guilty to dropping balloons at an event which Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife attended last month.
The maximum fine for the offence is RM100 but magistrate Nur Azura Murah imposed a RM500 bail.
Bilqis, 35, the daughter of prominent architect Hijjas Kasturi, was charged under the Minor Offences Act 1955.
She was represented by lawyer Michelle Yesudas.
Yesudas asked the court to set bail at between RM100 and RM150.
"Bail is imposed to secure attendance of the accused," she said, adding that her client was innocent until proven guilty.
Nur Azura fixed mention for October 25.
Electoral reform group Bersih 2.0 yesterday condemned the decision to prosecute Bilqis, describing it as a punishment.
On August 31, Bilqis released yellow balloons with the words "democracy", "free media" and "justice" printed on them from Level 5 of the Pavillion KL mall in Kuala Lumpur onto an event attended by Najib and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, on the ground floor of the shopping centre.
The balloons floated down behind the big screen television set at the event.
After the incident, Bilqis was nabbed by the mall’s auxiliary police and later handed over to the Dang Wangi police.
