Ex-MP Gobala charged with Sedition
KUALA LUMPUR - Former Padang Serai Member of Parliament, N. Gobalakrishnan, was charged with uttering seditious words against a High Court Judge at a press conference.
Gobalakrishnan, 55, claimed trial to uttering seditious words at Bunga Melor room, Hotel Seri Pacific, Jalan Putra, Chow Kit, between 4pm and 6pm on July 7, 2015.
He was charged under Section 4(1) (b) of the Sedition Act 1948, which carries a maximum of three years jail or RM5,000 or both, upon conviction, for the first offence.
Gobalakrishnan was alleged to have uttered the words when making a speech about a judge in relation to a particular case.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Suhaimi Ibrahim suggested RM7,000 bail with one surety.
Lawyer Lily Chua, who represented Gobalakrishnan asked for a minimum bail saying her client depended on his pension and furthermore was married with three children and two adopted grandchildren besides running a service centre for the poor.
Chua said the accused was charged in another court and attended the proceedings.
Sessions judge Azman Ahmad fixed RM4,000 with one surety and set Oct 23, 2015 for a mention. He also ordered the accused to surrender his passports. - Sundaily
