Schools in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negri Sembilan and several areas in Sarawak have been ordered closed tomorrow due to the worsening smoke, a statement by the Education Ministry said this afternoon.
This follows an increase in air pollution index (API) readings in several places, with five areas breaching the "very unhealthy" level.
The ministry's statement today said that the API reading in some areas recorded unhealthy (API 100-200) to very unhealthy (200-300) readings.
District education offices are to inform parents of the children and schools in the affected areas, it added.
In Sarawak, schools affected by the closure are in Sri Aman, Kuching and Samarahan, where the API was 190, 137 and 145, at noon, respectively.
At noon, the five areas with "very unhealthy" readings were Port Klang (245), Petaling Jaya (223), Shah Alam (272), Batu Muda in Kuala Lumpur (253) and Putrajaya (207), according to data on the Department of Environment website.
Twelve places had readings in the 100 to 200 or "unhealthy" category.
These included Nilai (140), Port Dickson (127) and Seremban (148) in Negri Sembilan; Jerantut (124) in Pahang, and Seri Manjung (126) and Tanjung Malim (149) in Perak.
In Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, Banting (190), Kuala Selangor (168) and Cheras (185) were also the unhealthy category.
