KUALA LUMPUR - Family members of murdered deputy public prosecutor Kevin Anthony Morais turned up at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) today but did not claim his remains as expected.
They did not offer an explanation, with the deceased's brother, Datuk Richard Dilaan only saying when contacted this evening that he would give a statement when he was ready.
City Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad was equally perplexed, saying police had given the go-ahead for Kevin’s family to claim his remains. Kevin's younger brothers — Richard, Charles and David — were seen at the hospital at 4.25pm but left without the remains two hours later.
It was learned that Charles, who resides in the United States, landed in Singapore at 6am today and took a drive to Kuala Lumpur to claim his brother’s remains. At 2pm, six superbikers believed to be Richard’s friends arrived at the hospital.
It was learned that they were supposed to have escorted Kevin's remains to the Shah Alam Nirvana Memorial Park for cremation. At 4.25pm, a black Porsche Panamera with three of Kevin’s relatives arrived. They were followed by a Nirvana Care Sdn Bhd hearse and, later, by Richard in a white Nissan Teana with a plate number with the name “Kevin Morais” written on it and decorated with roses.
Charles and David arrived within minutes of each other, around 5.20pm. Also present at HKL were relatives from Johor. However, at 6.20pm, the plan changed and Kevin’s remains were supposed to be transported to the Nirvana Memorial Centre in Sungai Besi where a Christian service was to be held.
A short while later, the plan was changed again and the family decided to leave Kevin’s body at the hospital mortuary for the time being. Kevin, who was previously seconded to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), was last seen leaving his Menara Duta apartment for work in his grey Proton Perdana on Sept 4.
Police received a report on the disappearance of the deputy head of the Appellate and Trial Division of the Attorney-General’s Chambers at 7pm the following day. Closed-circuit television camera recordings later showed Kevin had been abducted in Jalan Dutamas after another vehicle rammed into his Perdana. His body was discovered nearly two weeks later cemented in a barrel dumped in a partly-flooded area in USJ 1 in Subang Jaya. - NST
