An Indian national is being blackmailed by his former Filipina lover for PHP1 million (RM92,000) or she will post naked pictures and videos of him on a Facebook account for his family in India.
“I was introduced to the 29-year-old woman, whose name was Karen, by a Malaysian friend four years ago when I came here to do business,” said the 47-year-old victim, who only wanted to be known as Prasad.
“I went out with Karen about five times and it was in 2013 that she took the nude pictures and videos,” he said yesterday afternoon at the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department office.
Prasad said that he started to receive threatening messages from Karen when he ended the relationship last month.
“I told her that I couldn’t see her anymore because I was busy and wanted to concentrate on my business. She then started to become violent and blamed me for leaving her.
“She demanded I pay PHP1 million on September 18 or she would post the pictures and videos on my Facebook account,” he said.
Prasad said that since the incident in August he had deleted his Facebook account, but Karen had created another account using his identity and picture.
“Karen also added all my family members and friends. I quickly sent out and email to them and told them it was a fake account. Then my friends complained to Facebook and the account was deleted,” he said.
Fearing that his life would be ruined, Prasad said that he came back to Malaysia nine days ago to pay Karen the money.
“I have been trying to contact her since September 18 but there was no answer,” he said adding that he had lodged a police report the same day.
MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong said that he advised Prasad not to pay the money to Karen because she will never stop asking for more.
“I received complaints on how some of the victims of this type of scam had paid the money but were continually harassed. The authorities will have to look into this matter and see how best they can resolve it,” he said.
Chong said that since January to date he had dealt with 19 cases of scams and blackmails totalling RM2 million.
“Fifteen women and four men were being blackmailed by their former lovers. The problem usually happens when they meet online and get involved in relationships. This is when the perpetrators will take nude pictures and videos, and blackmail their victims. People must be more aware when dealing with strangers,” he said.
