KUALA KUMPUR: Lawyer Gobind Singh Deo said he was trying to find out what actually happened in the Muar High Court on Monday during a case involving his client, singer and rapper Namewee or Wee Meng Chee, which ended in the latter expressing outrage when it was postponed.
“He will be coming to my office in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday to see me,” he said in refusing further comment.
The lawyer had to reportedly attend another matter at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court and had asked for an adjournment of the case set for Monday. It was to have been the hearing of the prosecution’s appeal against the Muar Sessions Court order that the artiste serve three months of community service instead of a jail sentence after being found guilty on a charge.
When the case was postponed, Namewee appeared upset and lashed out at Johor prosecution chief Saiful Edris Zainuddin. He claimed the government hated him.
“Saya ambil banyak anugerah di luar negeri, saya tolong Malaysia tau, I am proud to be Malaysian,” he said. The moment was posted in a one minute and four seconds video on YouTube.

Saiful appeared expressionless in the video when confronted by Namewee. The artiste, in lashing out at the prosecutor, wondered “if Malaysia has two punishments for an offence”.
“Kalau you pencuri saya potong tangan nanti saya sambung balik potong kaki boleh tak?”
(If you are a thief and I amputate your arm but then later I reattach the arm and I amputate your legs? Is that possible?)
On December 1 last year, the Muar Sessions Court sentenced Namewee to three months community service from the conviction date after he pleaded guilty on a charge of “insulting modesty of a person” under section 509 of the Penal Code.
Sessions Court judge Roszianayati Ahmad had offered Namewee two choices; a three month jail sentence or three month community service. He opted for the latter option.
