Former Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has expressed dissatisfaction over 1MDB chief executive officer Arul Kanda Kandasamy’s explanation to the cabinet on the scandal afflicting the company.
According to a report on Sinar Harian’s online edition last night, Muhyiddin reportedly described Arul’s explanation as ‘saddening’.
“He came to present in the cabinet for 15 to 20 minutes, but no numbers were presented at all. This is a serious matter involving billions,” he was quoted as saying at a forum last night.
In a separate report of the same function by the Malay-language daily today, Muhyiddin reportedly said that does not know how is his party is being funded.
This is despite being the election director on 18 occasions, he said, because the party leadership had given full trust to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
This was until The Wall Street Journal reported in July that RM2.6 billion had been channelled into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s (photo) personal bank account.
“I am just the director. I didn’t even look at the money because the president has his strengths. We trusted him, so I didn’t ask about the money. Otherwise I want to know to.
“When it was exposed and revealed, what happened to it? I don’t know either. My God, that’s a lot of money,” he said.
Funds moved about
According to the WSJ report, part of the funds totalling RM42 million had been supposedly channelled from former 1MDB subsidiary SRC International.
The remaining US$681 million supposedly came from a British Virgin Islands company via a Swiss bank owned by International Petroleum Investment Co (IPIC), which had guaranteed billions of 1MDB bonds, the WSJ’s report said.
The latter transaction took place just ahead of the 2013 general election.
Najib has denied any wrongdoing.
Muhyiddin, who had been vocal in the 1MDB issue, was removed from the cabinet less than a month after the WSJ report after openly questioning Najib on the matter.
He reportedly lamented at the forum yesterday that to date, no one had been sacked over the scandal but him.
He said he had nothing but good intentions in calling for 1MDB directors and key persons involved in the scandal to be sacked.
“I want to help the government solve problems, otherwise it would become a burden. If it is not managed, it would topple us (the government). My views are sincere,” he was quoted as saying. -Mkini
