Incumbent MTUC president, secretary-general ousted in polls

This may pave the way for the in-coming commitee to fight harder for workers at a time when prices of essential items are going up, say insiders.

PETALING JAYA: Former secretary-general Abdul Halim Mansor caused a major upset to win the post of president of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) at its triennial delegates meeting today.
Halim polled 279 votes to defeat acting president Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid, who secured 251 votes.
Sani, the Kuala Selangor MP and the executive secretary of Club Employees Union of Peninsular Malaysia, had led the MTUC following the death of president Mohd Khalid Atan early this year.
National Union of Bank Employees general-secretary J Solomon was another surprise winner for the secretary-general’s post, edging out incumbent Gopal Kishnam.
Solomon polled 189 votes, Gopal 169 and a third candidate, Mohamed Dauzkaply, 165.
The deputy president’s post went to Mohd Jaafar Majid who beat Abdul Razak Md Hassan by a 87-vote majority.
Incumbent deputy secretary-general A Balasubramaniam retained his post by defeating A Prem Kumar by a four-vote majority.
Chief scrutineer N Rajamorganan announced the outcome.
Insiders said Halim’s and Solomon’s wins could pave the way for the in-coming office bearers to fight harder for workers at a time when wages are being suppressed although prices of essential items are going up. -FMT
