Agong: Gov't formulating unity action plan

PARLIAMENT The government is preparing an action plan to strengthen national unity and integration, said the Yang diPertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V.
"Our government is formulating an action plan to implement the 'Pelan perpaduan, kesepaduan dan penyatupaduan' (Unity and unification plan) which was based in line with the federal constitution and Rukun Negara," the monarch said.
Speaking at the opening of the first Parliament meeting of 2017 today, Sultan Muhammad said Malaysians should not be complacent with existing efforts to foster unity.
"While it not wrong to have differences in opinion, it is paramount that we resort to the right channels, without letting outsiders interfere with domestic affairs," His Majesty added.
Meanwhile on another matter, the monarch expressed support for efforts to strengthen "Islamic administrative laws".
This comes as Parliament is set to debate PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's Private Member's Bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355).
Hadi is seeking to raise the punishment cap for syariah offences to 30 years’ jail, RM100,000 fine and 100 strokes of the cane.
The current syariah punishment cap is three years’ imprisonment, RM5,000 fine and six strokes of the cane.

The King also hoped those who insult Islam will be dealt with "intelligence and firmness".
On a related note, Sultan Muhammad praised police efforts to combat radical and militant Islamic teachings.
Efforts to curb such teachings online and through the media must also be made, he said.- Mkini
