YOURSAY | ‘Any man can make mistakes, but only an idiot persists in his error.’
Ferdtan: An analogy to former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s statement on making ‘U-turn’ in his political life is the quote by Roman philosopher Marcus Cicero - “Any man can make mistakes, but only an idiot persists in his error.”
We, being no fans of Mahathir, doubted his sincerity; but when he made the decision to completely break ties with Umno and form a new party, it speaks volume.
He knew the risk of leaving Umno. Not unlike other opposition leaders, he gets ‘wacked’ constantly, with his name and reputation smeared by the government-controlled media.
For that, we respect him even more. Like him or not, we need him to get Malaysia out of the mess created by PM Najib Abdul Razak and Umno. No one, other than the one who is still in prison, can do that.
Dont Just Talk: Despite his advance age, Mahathir was at his vintage best when he said that only stupid drivers would continue to drive straight when they knew that the road ahead had been blown up.
But these ‘drivers’ are not stupid, Mahathir. Perhaps most of them, if not all, have a share of the US$681 million wired into their boss’ personal bank account, with Johor Baru Umno division leader Shahrir Samad admitting that he received RM1 million from MO1 (Malaysian Official 1).
And RM1 million is not a small sum to give away.
Wandering Star: When Mahathir was helming the rogue administration of Umno/BN, I strongly detested him.
Now he is on the right side of politics, seeking justice and an untainted government, I am with him all the way, even harbouring a fond respect for him.
There must be a strong reason why our Lord is keeping him strong, healthy and kicking. Long may Mahathir live to see the day of reckoning. I am glad that I, too, made a U-turn.
Behsaikong: Who among us will not understand Mahathir’s analogy? If there are no U-turns, how will we get to the many destinations required of us in life?
What The Dickens: Way to go, Tun! You are old in chronological age, but definitely not senile. You are still as sharp, smart and witty as ever.
Your rebuttal to MO1's aide Tengku Sariffuddin Tengku Ahmad is most apt and spot on. Only nincompoops follow their leaders blindly.
Ahbengkia: This is just too good not to repeat here: “Yes, I am working with the opposition parties to topple Najib. Only idiots or corrupt people would still support Najib and ignore the condemnation of him for money laundering by the rest of the world.
“Yes, I did a U-turn. Only a stupid driver would drive straight on when seeing the road ahead has been blown up and is no longer passable.
“To support Najib, who has been accused of stealing billions of ringgit and a dumb corrupt Umno would make me a traitor to my country. Hence the U-turn.
“The aide must have eaten a lot of bran in his mouth to make his stupid statement that I was running down the nation. The whole world has run down this nation.
“A country that was once labelled an Asian Tiger is now labelled as the second most corrupt country in the world. That is the achievement of Najib as prime minister of Malaysia.
“And that achievement is due to ministers and other BN leaders corruptly supporting him.”
ProPeR: Tun, you are absolutely correct. Sometimes one has to work with a small enemy to take down a bigger enemy - in this case, a corrupted government and its corrupted leaders.
Blind support will lead to the destruction of our beloved country.
BernieBaby: Brilliant response, Mahathir. Indeed, it's time for you to help fix the mess you created.
The road you talk about was designed, built and paved by yourself. Please do a proper job now, you know that time is not on your side.
What the nation needs is a change in management, this means the current government has to go. Whoever comes in must fix things.
Vijay47: Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz, we are glad that you finally agree that Proton is a white elephant, a towering monument to one man's ego trip going against the face of commercial wisdom.
If that man has of late realised the error of his ways, it still cannot detract from the fact that Proton is a total drain on our increasingly decreasing resources and a right royal pain in our common bottom.
Mahathir left the management scene years ago, so why are you and Umno still toting around the huge carcass of a dead white elephant? Perhaps you see in Proton a political necessity to keep the natives happy?
Never mind if the company chalks up huge yearly losses almost as bad or even exceeding that of MAS (Malaysia Airlines), as long as it is another source to milk the country. Hey! Felda is not the only way to skin a cat.
BernieBaby: Does anybody else recall an article in 1985-1986 on a research/study done by an renowned industrial economist that building Protons was not viable for Malaysia?
Our internal market was too small to sustain car manufacturing and we had to be very successful in marketing our cars abroad to break even. The Koreans are examples of that success (Hyundai and Kia).
Paul Warren: I said it way back when the Proton proposal was first made. But it took these idiots 34 years or so to acknowledge it.
Just like we all knew about the forex (foreign exchange) losses when it happened. But it took Umno leaders over 30 years before recognising it.
Why you guys so slow, eh?- Mkini
