BATU GAJAH: A labourer was sentenced to eight months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today for making statements with intent or likely to cause fear among the public.
Magistrate Mohd Fitri Sadarudin ordered Faizal Yeop Idris, 30, to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest on Feb 25.
Yeop was charged with causing public mischief by saying, “There is a bomb, there is a bomb” at a traffic light intersection near Bota Kiri at 11.15am on Feb 25.
The charge, under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code, provides imprisonment of up to two years, or a fine, or both, if found guilty.
In mitigation, Hennie Soraya Hanafi from the National Legal Aid Foundation, who represented Yeop, said her client had apologised for his mistake.
However, deputy public prosecutor Nurul Qistini Qamarul Abrar, requested for a severe sentence as a lesson to others.
“The action by the accused had inconvenienced many quarters, including the Royal Malaysia Police Bomb Disposal Unit from Bukit Aman and Penang that went to the location.”
She said the accused also had a previous record for crime and drug-related offences.
According to the facts of the case, Yeop left the Mercedes Benz car he was driving at the traffic light intersection and then shouted there was a bomb in the car before fleeing the scene in another car.
A search by the bomb disposal unit found no bomb or chemical in the car, but only a long machete.
The scene was the route of the fourth stage of the Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) and Yeop made the false claim about 15 minutes after the last participant in the race had passed through the area. -FMT
