Ministry of Domestic Trade Co-operatives and Consumerism today confirmed that sugar prices have been increased, effective yesterday.
In a statement released on its official Facebook today, the ministry said the new sugar price is set at RM2.95 per kilogram.
The increase of 11 sen is the first hike since Oct 25, 2013.
"This (hike) is due to the drastic increase in the global price of unrefined sugar imported by Malaysia.
"However, the government is still controlling the price at a minimum level compared to the hikes in other countries," it said.
The ministry said the new price was set under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering (Determination of Maximum Price) Order.
During the last increase in 2013, sugar price went up by 34 sen to RM2.84 per kilogram.
The sum was rounded to RM2.85 per kilogram.-Mkini
