PARLIAMENT There is no need to wait until 2050 for a woman to be made prime minister as the opposition is ready to appoint one after the 14th general election, a DAP lawmaker said today.
"We (the opposition) are ready to support Permatang Pauh (PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail) as the prime minister if we are given the mandate.
"There's no need to wait for 2050," Loke, the MP for Seremban from the DAP, said in the House today when debating on the royal address of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
He was responding to Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who said in his International Women's Day message today that, hopefully by 2050, Malaysia would have a female prime minister.
Loke said this reflected badly on BN's mindset.
"This symbolises BN's mindset that women today are not qualified to be prime minister," he said.
Loke also expressed hope that some day there would be a woman speaker for Parliament as well.
He cited how the opposition-led Selangor government is the first state assembly in the country to appoint a woman - Hannah Yeoh - as its speaker.
The opposition has yet to officially state who its choice for prime minister will be, should it win the next general election.
The stand within Pakatan Harapan at the moment is that Anwar Ibrahim will be the prime minister.
However, Anwar is currently serving a five-year jail sentence for sodomy.
Harapan's new alliance with Umno splinter group Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is also seen as a complication upon discussions on who should head the government.- Mkini
