PAS central committee member Mohamed Fadzil Hassan said he is against a proposed debate between party president Abdul Hadi Awang and Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin on the amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965.
Mohamed Fadzil said as a religious scholar, Mohd Asri should not bring down another religious scholar in a debate.
"As a mufti whose duty is to defend religion, this is the time to support and not bring down each other or to show his views is correct and others are not.
"I disagree with the (debate) approach) and I am confident Hadi, too, disagrees with it.
"I feel there is no need to debate... I would advise Hadi against it," he told journalists after a forum in Kuala Lumpur today.
Earlier today, Mohd Asri said he was prepared to debate with Hadi on the amendments if the latter was agreeable to it.
This was after PAS Ulama information chief Khairuddin Aman Razali said any mufti who did not see the amendments as religiously compulsory should have their head "knocked".
Elaborating on the matter today, Fadzli said a debate would not be beneficial and would instead make people confused.
Fadzli said Mohd Asri should back any efforts that is in the interest of Islam.
"We must take a more diplomatic and harmonious approach and have dialogues, that is better and more conducive.
"If there are any weaknesses, we can fix it," he said.- Mkini
