The bid by a group of activists to expel controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik from the country has seditious elements, claimed Perkasa Youth.
“Perkasa Youth views seriously this uncouth and seditious statement which is trying to destroy the unity of the country,” said Perkasa Youth chief Azrul Akmal Saharudin in a statement today.
As such, he said, they have lodged police reports in Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan and Selangor on this matter.
He said they want the police to take action against Hindraf chairperson P Waythamoorthy.
Waythamoorthy is just one of 18 plaintiffs in a suit filed on Wednesday, seeking for, among others, the arrest and deportation of Zakir who they believe to be in Malaysia.
The plaintiffs also included Bingkor assemblyperson Jeffrey Kitingan, lawyer Siti Kasim and Centre for Policy Initiatives director Lim Teck Ghee.
They are also seeking declarations that Zakir is a threat to national security, harmony and unity, claiming in the court documents that his teachings promote terrorism and would harm unity and peace in Malaysia.
Such statements are seditious, Azrul said, and could cause disharmony among the multi-religious Malaysia.
“It is public knowledge that Zakir is an acclaimed and respected Islamic preacher in Malaysia based on his knowledge in the field of comparative religion and his missionary efforts.
“Any accusations that he is a threat to the country and such must include strong evidence and not just based on the perceptions of non-Islamic countries who surely have their own agenda in blocking Islamic missionary efforts,” he said.
Waythamoorthy had pointed out that Zakir is banned from several countries including the UK and Canada.
Painting Zakir in a bad light is a desperate and undignified shot by Hindraf and Waythamoorthy, Azrul claimed.
He pointed out that in the Malaysian federal constitution, Islam is enshrined as the official religion and any Islamic missionary efforts is allowed.
Zakir’s presence in Malaysia had sparked controversy as he had planned to hold a talk last year comparing Islam and Hinduism.
The outcry prompted authorities to ban the event, but the ban was later lifted after the topic was changed to ‘Is Quran the word of God?’- Mkini
