A Penang Wanita DAP leader has lodged a police report on a Facebook post that accused her of attacking various Islamic institutions, such as the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim).
The Facebook post by "Darul Ehsan Leaks" titled "Sumpah Syerleena (Syerleena's pledge)" claimed that Syerleena has "sworn to attack various Islamic institutions like Jakim (Islamic Development Department) for DAP".
This Facebook post in question appears to be no longer accessible, as of noon today.
After lodging the police report, Syerleena told the press that the offensive Facebook post was in response to her statement on Jakim and women's rights.
She claimed that "Darul Ehsan Leaks" had taken her comment out of context.
"My statement only sought to remind Malaysians that Islam is a beautiful religion and one that does not condone hatred," Syerleena said.
"Jakim, being a government sanctioned institution, should have been more responsible in its message.
"There have been too many reports of sermons being hijacked by hate-filled rhetoric, which should not have been allowed in the first place," stressed the Penang DAP assistant publicity secretary.
She explained that her statement on March 4 was a reaction to a Jakim-prepared sermon for last week's Friday prayers, which, among others, claimed that women's rights proponents are influenced by anti-Islam propaganda.
Syerleena said for years there have been reports of sermons that allegedly single out women and demonise those who are not afraid to speak out against misogyny perpetuated by overzealous bigots.
Although Malaysia is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country, these concepts have slowly eroded as the years pass, Syerleena noted.
She attributed it to the "rise of right wing populism, religious extremism, threats from the Islamic State and other dangerous ideologies", which have made it difficult for rational thinking.- Mkini
