Umno and PAS may be able to cooperate on religious matters, but when it comes to elections in Kelantan, they are rivals, said state Umno leader Mustapa Mohamed.
Muatapa said extraordinary preparations are underway to wrest Kelantan from PAS, which has enjoyed uninterrupted rule since 1990.
"PAS, PKR, Amanah and flower (Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia) are our political enemies.
"MCA, MIC (and other component parties) are our friends. That is the reality.
"Our enemy in Kelantan is PAS," he told a BN meeting in Kota Bharu yesterday, according to The Star.
He said that many PAS leaders continue to condemn BN and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
"That is why we have issued the order, declaring political rivalry," he said.
On political strategy, he said Umno's challenge was to convince voters who are under 40 years of age, who make up about 40 percent of the electorate.
He added that Umno would be identifying some 90,000 Kelantanese who live elsewhere but would return to vote during elections.- Mkini
