Fisheries department says it has no power to seal fish farm at disused mining pool as it is under purview of Kampar District and Land Office.
TELUK INTAN: Laboratory tests found no pig deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in fish from a disused mining pool at Kuala Dipang in Kampar, Perak.
Perak fisheries department director Dr Bah Piyan Tan said this followed three tests conducted by the Kuala Lumpur Fisheries Biosecurity Centre on samples of fish and water from the pool.
He said the results on March 27 showed they tested negative for pig DNA.
“We cannot say the samples were completely free of pig DNA because after 72 hours, researchers will have difficulty finding DNA as the food had been digested.
“Maybe, when the samples were taken long after the incident but researchers did find remains of animal bones and flesh in the pool,” he told reporters after a gotong-royong programme in conjunction with the 2017 National Farmers Wave here today.
Asked if the five-hectare pool was still operating, Bah said the fisheries department had no power to seal it as it was under the purview of the Kampar District and Land Office.
“Checks also found the pool which is not registered with the fisheries department, is illegal and did not obtain approval from the Kampar Land Office,” he added.
The pool, believed to be operating illegally on mining land in Kuala Dipang was raided by the authorities on March 7, following information that fish in the pond were fed with pig carcasses. -FMT
