Tommy Thomas has told the Malaysian Bar Council he would not participate in cases involving people he might have known when he was in private practice.

PUTRAJAYA: Attorney-General (AG) Tommy Thomas has given an assurance that he will recuse himself from cases involving people he may know to avoid conflict of interest, according to the Malaysian Bar Council.
Bar president George Varughese said the solicitor-general would then step in and carry out the functions of the AG as allowed by the law.
“The AG assured us when it comes to people he may have known when he was in private practice, where conflict of interest arises, he will immediately recuse himself from the issue involving these people,” he said after a closed-door meeting with Tommy at the AG’s Chambers here today.
Tommy, 66, is the first practising lawyer to be appointed directly from the Bar as AG. He has over 40 years of experience and replaces Mohamed Apandi Ali.
On today’s meeting, Varughese said it was fruitful where both Tommy and the council put forward suggestions and proposals, with the AG looking forward to closer ties and cooperation including the sharing of knowledge. - FMT
