Lawyer Eric Paulsen has been awarded RM100,000 by the Court of Appeal yesterday after overturning a High Court decision on his defamation suit against preacher Mohamed Hafiz Mohamed Nordin.
The three-member Court of Appeal panel, led by Justice Tengku Maimum Tuan Mat, unanimously ruled to overturn this decision. They also ordered Mohamed Hafiz to pay RM10,000 in costs.
Paulsen sued Mohamed Hafiz in January 2015 for stating that one of the lawyer's tweets was instigating hatred towards Islam.
The tweet in question was of Paulsen accusing Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) of promoting extremism "every Friday".
Paulsen was arrested the same year over the tweet and chargedfor violating the Sedition Act 1948. The trial is still ongoing. -Mkini
