Bersatu opens membership to Sabahans in peninsula

Bersatu has opened its doors to Sabahans – but only to those residing in Peninsular Malaysia, says supreme council member Abu Bakar Yahya.
"Bersatu only opens membership to Sabahans living in the peninsula. For now, the party will not set foot in Sabah.
"We still respect our Pakatan Harapan partners in Sabah. We will not take members from Sabah, only those in the peninsula," he said.
Abu Bakar, the political secretary to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said this today on the sidelines of a ceremony in Rawang, where 500 Sabahans submitted their application forms to join Bersatu.
"They are not only from here (Rawang). There are those from other places.
"I will forward the forms to the party headquarters. They will decide on the membership of the Sabahans," he told reporters.
Also present during the ceremony was Selayang Bersatu chief Zulkifli Mohamad, and event organiser Adzmi KK Juatan (photo), who chairs the Bersatu Kinabalu Organisation.
As Adzmi later told reporters, allowing Sabahans to join the party would help safeguard their welfare.
"Our priority is to bring them into Bersatu. However, we are also open to them joining other parties in Pakatan Harapan.
"Besides giving Sabahans in the peninsula knowledge of politics, we will also take care of their welfare.
"So far, we've managed to register 2,500 Sabahans, including 500 today. After this we will go to Shah Alam, and then to Johor," he said.
According to Adzmi, there are some 40,000 Sabahans who reside in Selangor, and another 20,000 are in Johor.
"Our objective is to unite them under one umbrella," he added. - Mkini
