KOTA KINABALU: A 10-year-old primary school girl was killed and two others were critically injured when a car driven by a farmer ploughed into them, as they waited for their ride to school in Kota Belud about 70km from here.
Max Christty, a student of SK Tempasuk 2, died on the spot due to head injuries sustained in the accident that occurred at the Kg Tempasuk 2 road in Kg Rinig at about 6.40am on Monday (March 11).
Two others – a 14-year-old secondary student Michelle Marianne David, 14, from SMK Pekan 1 Kota Belud, and seven-year-old Maxryona Masdi, are in critical condition with head injuries.
They were initially treated at the Kota Belud district hospital, before being transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here.
Firemen, who responded to the distress call, said that the students were waiting for to be picked up to go school when the vehicle, a car, driven by a 54-year-old farmer, crashed into them.
It is believed that the farmer, who was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, was on his way home when he drove off the road and crashed into the three students before landing into the compound of a house in the area.
The farmer apparently escaped with light injuries and was given outpatient treatment. He has been detained for questioning by police.- Star
