Report: KJ says Syed Saddiq's youth platform may force Umno rejuvenation

Malaysiakini

Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has reportedly welcomed his former Bersatu counterpart Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s bid to set up a youth-based political platform.
According to a report, the science, technology and innovation minister said the new platform will provide competition to his own party and send a signal that it must reinvent itself to appeal to young Malaysians.
“If we can’t compete with new parties like this one, we won’t be able to get the youth’s support.
“I see this as a positive move. Maybe it will quicken the rejuvenation of my 'old' party,” he was quoted as saying by The Malaysian Insight at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
“We welcome and embrace this as part of democracy. I feel that the younger generation, the millennials, want to be represented.
“They can be represented by this new party. They can also be represented through existing parties,” he added.
However, the report said Khairy he will remain with Umno and will not be joining Syed Saddiq.
The Muar MP is currently in discussion with stakeholders to launch a new youth movement, which is tentatively named “Muda Malaysia”.
Syed Saddiq described it as a “platform, movement and potential party” that will be ethnically diverse, and policy-driven.
He said he aims to “disrupt” the political status quo in Malaysia through the youth vote, but his former mentor Dr Mahathir Mohamad has viewed his bid with scepticism. - Mkini
