Guan Eng to skip Johor DAP convention due to quarantine

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng will not be able to attend the Johor DAP convention tomorrow after he had contact with a Covid-19 positive patient and is quarantined at home.

DAP national organising-secretary Anthony Loke Siew Fook confirmed this to Malaysiakini this morning.

According to Loke, he and party Deputy Chairperson Gobind Singh Deo will attend the state convention on behalf of the party's Central Executive Committee.

He also mentioned that Gobind might be giving an opening speech at the convention.

Yesterday, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang also said he is being quarantined for 10 days after being in contact with a Covid-19 patient and will not attend the state convention and polls.

In the meantime, he called for all candidates to rally behind incumbent Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong and his deputy Teo Nie Ching.

For the record, both Guan Eng and Kit Siang have received their second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine on March 26 and April 6 respectively.

Johor DAP delegates will elect their state leaders on Sunday, May 2. Liew and Teo are among 40 candidates standing in the polls, in which only 15 leaders would be elected.

DAP has a two-tier election system. In the first round, delegates from branches elect the state committee members, who in turn elect the 15-member state line-up in the second round of polling.

The state poll is expected to be intense as it is reported that incumbent state secretary Tan Hong Pin and his team will challenge incumbent state chief Liew.

Some reports said Tan will team up with former state chief Dr Boo Cheng Hau to oust Liew.

Tan and Dr Boo previously cooperated and mounted a "surprise attack" on Liew in the 2018 polls but failed to unseat Liew for his third term as the Johor DAP chief. - Mkini
