Cops continuing sedition probe, #Lawan activists called up again

The police continue to investigate activists affiliated with Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR) for sedition over the cancelled second #Lawan protest.

Lawyer Rajsurian Pillai confirmed that seven of the activists will head to the Dang Wangi district police H

headquarters in Kuala Lumpur at 10am on Saturday (Sept 4) to give additional statements.

The activists are Mohammad Asraf Sharafi Mohammad Azhar, Mohamad Abdullah Alshatry, Qyira Yusri, Tharmalinggam Pillai, Dobby Chew, and Sarah Irdina.

The seven were previously called up on Aug 13 over their role in planning a second “bigger” #Lawan protest.

SSR had announced it was planning a protest on Aug 21 following the first protest in July demanding the resignation of then prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

The proposed Aug 21 protest was called off after their primary demand was met on Aug 16 when Muhyiddin stepped down.

The activists were investigated under Section 4 of the 1948 Sedition Act for publishing seditious content, and Section 233 of the 1998 Communication and Multimedia Act for sharing offensive and menacing content.

Rajsurian previously said the police called the activists in for investigation after multiple reports were made by the public against the planned gathering at Dataran Merdeka.

Meanwhile, Qyira said the police questioning was ridiculous and unnecessary, claiming the activists have repeatedly cooperated at each questioning.

“The usage of a colonial law such as the Sedition Act to intimidate and harass young activists is an abuse of power.

“Why is there a need for the police to call us in twice on the same investigation? Is this an indicator of their competency levels?” she questioned when contacted by Malaysiakini.

Qyira and other activists from SSR were previously investigated for the first #Lawan protest and compounded RM2,000 each for organising a vigil for Covid-19 victims on Aug 19. - Mkini
