PM announces Special Committee on Pandemic Management

The special meetings on Covid-19 pandemic management will now be officially known as the Special Committee on Pandemic Management.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the rebranded committee will include representatives from opposition parties as well.

"This approach is part of our collective effort to involve all stakeholders and ensure the nation's recovery will proceed as planned, in line with the Keluarga Malaysia spirit," he said in a statement today.

Prior to his ascension, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong urged whoever becomes prime minister to foster bipartisan cooperation.

Shortly after taking office, Ismail Sabri met with top Pakatan Harapan leaders in Putrajaya, after which PKR president Anwar Ibrahim said the opposition would not "complicate" any upcoming vote of confidence if the government acts in the interest of the people.

Ismail Sabri noted that today was the first time in several months that Malaysia's recorded R-naught dipped below 1.0.

He reiterated the target of vaccinating over 80 percent of adults by the end of this month and 100 percent by end-October.

"Everybody must be ready to live with Covid-19... after October once the vaccination process is completed.

"Therefore, the Health Ministry has been asked to table a new suitable pandemic and endemic strategic plan, aside from compliance to standard operating procedures," he said.

Khairy Jamaluddin at his first press conference as health minister yesterday said Covid-19 will be treated as endemic and Malaysia will move away from the current total containment approach.

He said new rules will be introduced by the government soon for people to return to their normal lifestyle while maintaining safety. - Mkini
