Bersatu's Tasek Gelugor MP Shabudin Yahaya, who was dropped as a deputy minister, has been appointed as the new Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) chairperson.
He replaces the late Bersatu supreme council member Lajim Ukin who passed away from Covid-19 on Aug 29.
AIM is a private trust that receives government funding which it uses to provide micro-loans in line with its mission to uplift communities from poverty.
AIM said it is confident that Shahbudin will help guide it to greater heights.
"Through his leadership and experience, we are confident he can lead AIM which has 356,024 Sahabat, to greater heights and excellence," AIM said in a statement confirming his appointment today.
"Sahabat" is a term used by AIM to refer to its micro-loan clients.
Shabudin was formerly with Umno but defected to Bersatu in 2019.
He served briefly as the Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Felcra) chairperson in May last year.
In July last year, he was tapped as a deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of law and Parliament under Muhyiddin Yassin's government.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who took over after the collapse of Muhyiddin's 17-month-old government last month, retained most of the ministers and deputy ministers from the previous government.
However, Shabudin was among the handful who were dropped.
AIM congratulated Shahbudin on his appointment.
"May his appointment help improve AIM's role and function in helping the government to reduce poverty and improve the economic standards of low-income households," it said. - Mkini
