Muhyiddin thanks govt for trusting him to continue past Covid-19 recovery efforts

Newly minted National Recovery Council (NRC) chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin has thanked the government for trusting him to continue previous Covid-19 recovery efforts.

He said the NRC would be assisting Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and the government through the recovery phases as outlined under the National Recovery Plan (NRP).

"The trust given by the government is a responsibility for me to continue all efforts and plans which had been initiated before this to heal the country from the effects of Covid-19.

"God willing, I will make use of all my experiences and hope for support from everyone in the spirit of the 'Malaysian family' to ensure goals to protect lives and guarantee livelihoods and national recovery can be realised," he said in a Facebook post tonight.

Critics have questioned Muhyiddin's appointment as the NRC chairperson - a post that comes with a minister status.

This is as Muhyiddin was ousted as prime minister ostensibly due to his failure in containing the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was his government that introduced the NRP which aimed to gradually re-open sectors as pandemic conditions improved based on three criteria - daily case numbers, hospital capacity, and vaccination rate.

The NRP has been panned as critics call out the inconsistent application of its criteria.

The government had justified this by saying the plan was "agile". - Mkini
