Newly appointed Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said she is streamlining her ministry to avoid unnecessary expenditures and is prepared to consider recommendations, including from the opposition.
She noted that former plantation industries and commodities minister Teresa Kok had made various recommendations, particularly on conservation projects involving the oil palm industry.
"In my review of the various agencies and councils, I will consider some of the logical recommendations proposed.
"If YB Teresa wants to continue to contribute her thoughts, I also welcome that," Zuraida (above) said in a statement.
Apart from cutting on expenditure, she said, among the first things she wishes to do in her new position is to enhance the value of downstream commodity products and to actively engage the anti-commodities campaigns, particularly in the European Union and the United States.
"I will also be implementing corporate strategies to enable a circular economy that takes into account concerns by environmentalists and human rights activists.
"With feedback from industry players, I hope to make necessary changes to help boost revenues to make recoveries in the commodities sector," Zuraida said.
She added that she would also work to address the labour shortage and vaccination rate for all workers in the plantation industries.
Zuraida, who was formerly housing and local government minister under the previous Muhyiddin Yassin cabinet, was reassigned to the plantation industries and commodities ministry under Ismail Sabri Yaakob's government. - Mkini
