PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) today announced its first candidate for the Johor state elections. Incumbent DAP assemblyman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali will be defending his Paloh seat.

In a statement, PH said the 36-year-old former student activist from Universiti Malaya (UM) was the perfect candidate, having served as a Johor executive councillor in various capacities.

Sheikh Umar was also a special assistant to then Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong, from 2014 to 2017.

Prior to that, he was an administrative and diplomatic officer (PTD) under the federal civil service, taking on roles such as assistant director at the immigration department and assistant secretary at the primary industries ministry.

“Fielding him in the last general election helped DAP win a ‘yet to be won’ seat. Moreover, his win in the 14th general election (GE14) helped PH form the Johor government in May 2018,” the statement read.

Sheikh Umar won the Paloh seat in GE14 with a majority of 783 votes. This was a shocking win as Barisan Nasional-MCA had won the seat seven times since the seat was created in 1986.

The racial breakdown among voters in the constituency is 47% Malays, 37% Chinese, 15% Indians and 1% Orang Asli. - FMT
