PETALING JAYA: Home improvement retailer Mr DIY Malaysia has denounced the behaviour of an employee who turned away a woman seeking a job based on her race.
This comes after a TikTok user, @itsbrownbarbie, alleged that an employee of a Mr DIY branch in Bangi, Selangor, had discriminated against Indians.
She said the incident happened when her sister went to the Mr DIY outlet to look for a job.
“My sister and I went to the store and were immediately told that the manager of Mr DIY does not wish to hire Indians,” the user complained in the video that has gone viral.
“Do not do this. You have offended the person just because they are born dark-skinned.”
In a statement to FMT, Mr DIY said the company conducted an immediate and thorough internal investigation on the complaint.
“We confirm the behaviour of the specific employee. It was found to be unacceptable and in violation of our policy on diversity and inclusion.
“Appropriate action is being taken to resolve the matter,” it said in a statement.
The company added that it had reached out to the affected individual to express their regret over the incident and have since apologised.
“Mr DIY would like to reiterate that we do not accept any behaviour in violation of our policy on diversity and inclusion and will make every effort to prevent such occurrences in the future.
“We are an equal opportunity employer and a proudly Malaysian company,” it said. - FMT
