Assault on security guard: Businessperson's murder trial next May

A businessperson’s murder case involving security guard S Thava Sagayam will come up for full trial in May next year.

The Ipoh High Court is set to hear the case against Ahmad Noor Azhar Muhammad for seven days beginning May 22, 2023.

The 34-year-old accused’s lawyer Ariff Azami Hussein confirmed that judicial commissioner Su Tiang Joo would preside over the proceedings

He added that the matter would come up for mention before the court on May 30 this year.

In January last year, Ahmad Noor Azhar was initially charged under Section 335 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt against the 64-year-old victim, who was then still alive.

However, the prosecution dropped the initial charge and brought a murder charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code against the accused following Thava Sagayam’s death last August.

The accused is currently under custody as murder is a non-bailable offence.

Thava Sagayam was assaulted on Dec 29, 2020, while on duty at a condominium in Ipoh. A recording of the incident went viral on social media.

The security guard spent the next eight months fighting for his life before passing away on Aug 27, last year.

It was reported that the deceased’s wife had appointed Ipoh Barat MP M Kulasegaran to hold a watching brief.

Other lawyers for Theva Sagayam’s family are A Sivanesan, Selvam Nadarajah and Omar Kutty. - Mkini
