Putrajaya has been urged to issue face mask guidelines targeted at specific groups when the government eventually decides to do away with the face mask mandate.
Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii pointed out that face masks are still helpful for those with compromised immunity or those living with ones who are.
"In such cases, it is a good idea to continue wearing a mask and maintaining social distance around strangers, especially in indoor areas with non-circulating air where the virus may collect.
"Masks are also important if you’re unvaccinated or spending time with others who are unvaccinated. Unvaccinated people, including children, are at overwhelmingly higher risk of hospitalisation and death from Covid-19.
"Masks are also a must in hospitals or healthcare facilities, where there are many vulnerable people," he said in a statement today.
Yii, who was trained as a medical doctor, argued that the dropping of mask mandates in some countries had led to a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases which could possibly overwhelm healthcare systems.
Conversely, he claimed that Malaysia's mask rule had helped during the Covid-19 Omicron wave.
Yesterday, Bukit Aman withdrew instructions for the police to stop enforcing the mask mandate.
Masks are mandated through regulations issued by the Health Ministry under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease Act 1988. Violators can be fined up to RM1,000.
Masks are one of the very few remaining Covid-19 protocols, alongside the use of the MySejahtera application for "check-in" purposes and physical distancing. - Mkini
