Bersatu to propose Muhyiddin as GE15 PM candidate

Bersatu supreme council member Razali Idris said his party will propose its president Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister if Perikatan Nasional (PN) wins in the next general election.

Razali said Muhyiddin was the most qualified candidate as he had proven his ability to lead the country during his 17-month tenure as prime minister until August last year when he was ousted by a group of Umno MPs.

“Bersatu will propose Muhyiddin as the prime ministerial candidate in the next general election.

“He had resigned because he was rejected by a group of 15 BN MPs led by (Umno president) Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, he was not rejected by the people,” Razali was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

Razali’s statement came after the Umno supreme council on Thursday announced that it planned to retain party vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the prime minister if BN wins the next general election.

‘Why is party No 3 the PM?’

Razali pointed out that Muhyiddin as the Bersatu president is more senior in terms of party hierarchy compared to Ismail Sabri’s vice-president position in Umno.

“The people are wondering why a leader who is ranked number three in the party is being proposed (as the prime minister).

“Are their number one and number two leaders not qualified?” he said.

Zahid is facing 47 charges of money laundering, criminal breach of trust, and bribery over tens of millions of ringgit belonging to Yayasan Akalbudi, a charitable organisation he founded.

He is also facing 40 charges of bribery involving more than RM43 million for the Foreign Visa System.

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hassan is recently also facing accusations of corruption which his allies have claimed to be an attempt to discredit him.

Razali said, for the time being, Bersatu will continue to support Ismail Sabri as the prime minister until Parliament is dissolved.

Both PN, which comprises Bersatu, PAS, Star, Gerakan and SAPP and BN comprising Umno, MCA, MIC and PBRS, are part of the government but have contested against each other electorally.

Yesterday, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang criticised Umno as “hasty” in announcing its prime ministerial candidate.- Mkini
