Umno man tells Hadi to zip it on their PM candidate

A veteran Umno leader has hit back at PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang for suggesting that Umno was being hasty in naming their prime ministerial candidate.

Umno Veterans Club secretary Mustapha Yaakub (above) said Hadi should not interfere in Umno's matters.

"Umno Veterans would like to advise Hadi not to be a busybody in regards to Umno's matters.

"It would be best for him to take care of PAS' affairs," Mustapha said in a statement.

He added that PAS is free to name its own prime ministerial candidate.

The Umno supreme council on Thursday (April 14) announced that it planned to retain Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the prime minister if BN wins in the next general election.

"The Umno supreme council nominating Ismail Sabri as the prime minister if BN wins, it is Umno's right. Whether it is hasty or not, it is Umno's right.

"If PAS feels that Perikatan Nasional can win in the election, it can name anyone they want as the prime minister. Umno won't take an interest nor interfere," he said.

Johor state election

Yesterday, Hadi, who is also the Marang MP, reminded Umno of what happened after the Johor polls.

Umno announced it intended to retain Hasni Mohamad as the Johor menteri besar if it won the state election.

BN won 40 out of the 56 seats in the state, with Umno winning 33, but was unable to get royal assent for Hasni to remain as the menteri besar.

"There is no need to be hasty or we may end up like a situation in Johor. Nominate one person but another person is appointed. Order one item but something else arrives," he said.

However, Mustapha said the situation in Johor was different as the state constitution was not the same as the Federal Constitution.

"The power to appoint the Johor menteri besar is within the Sultan's power. It's not the same as the appointment of the prime minister by the Yang di-Pertuan gong which is based on the candidate from the party that has the most support and won in the general election.

"Therefore Umno veterans urge Hadi to shut his mouth and stop issuing foolish statements about Umno's decisions.

"Mind your own business," he said. - Mkini
