Bersatu Youth claimed it was ex-prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad who had reached out to his party president Muhyiddin Yassin.
This was after Mahathir expressed puzzlement as to why Muhyiddin wanted to meet him when the Bersatu leader had "backstabbed" him.
“It was not Muhyiddin who wanted to meet Mahathir. But, it was Mahathir who sent his emissary, Khairuddin Salleh, to meet Muhyiddin," Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad Kamal was quoted as saying by The Star.
Yesterday, Mahathir confirmed Muhyiddin had met with him recently and the nonagenarian's support for him to become prime minister again.
"I did not know what to say to him. I stepped down from the prime minister’s post because of what Muhyiddin did. He backstabbed me. The person he backstabbed isn't even dead yet," Mahathir had said.
Wan Ahmad Fayshal described Mahathir as "bitter" for making the statement.
He added that among the topics of discussion was on ensuring straight fights in the 15th general election.
Muhyiddin had in Feb 2022 taken Bersatu out of Pakatan Harapan against Mahathir's wishes.
Along with a group of PKR defectors, he toppled the Harapan government led by Mahathir to form a new coalition with the then opposition which included Umno.
However, Muhyiddin's Perikatan Nasional government was short-lived after a group of Umno MPs toppled Muhyiddin in August last year. - Mkini
