PETALING JAYA: Civil servants who are forced to move house because of natural disasters can now claim mileage allowances under a revised provision that came into effect on April 1.

In a Treasury circular sighted by FMT, the government added this provision to the existing one that allows civil servants to claim when moving house for specific purposes.

Among the natural disasters cited in the circular are floods, landslides, fire, house collapse and also those losing their homes because of the government acquiring the land on which their houses stand.

It is understood that the new clause was added after many civil servants were forced to vacate their homes during the massive floods last December.

Previously, this entitlement was for those moving into government quarters or those forced to move out because of service requirements.

Those moving from their rented houses to their own bought using government loans are also entitled to the claims.

Under the mileage rates, married staff will get a fixed amount of RM300 if the move is within a 50km radius, and declining rates according to the distance from RM2.10 per km to a minimum of 85 sen.

The circular also announced a hike in all claims related to the transfer of civil servants as it is believed to have been last revised more than 10 years ago. - FMT
