PETALING JAYA: Controversial former Melaka assemblyman Norhizam Hassan Baktee, now without a party, is eyeing a chance of becoming an MP at the next general election.
He said today he is looking forward to contesting in Hang Tuah Jaya, and claimed he is being courted by several parties after what he described as his excellent performance as Pengkalan Batu assemblyman.
“There are many offers, but I’m still looking. However, I am ready to be a DAP or Umno member again, because for me, these parties have never done wrong. What has gone wrong is the party’s leadership,” he said.
Norhizam told Mingguan Malaysia that he wanted to contest the election on a party ticket, to avoid another poor showing as in the Melaka elections in October, when he failed to defend his seat as an independent candidate.
“I have an excellent record as the Pengkalan Batu assemblyman and a Melaka state executive councillor, so this is a strong reason to contest for the Hang Tuah Jaya parliamentary seat.
“What’s more, the people want me to make a ‘comeback’. But I must have a house (party). If there is no house, it is difficult,” he said.
The Hang Tuah Jaya parliamentary seat is currently held by PKR information chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin.
Norhizam, who was with Umno before switching to DAP in 2006, was one of the four assemblymen who caused the fall of the Sulaiman Md Ali government last October, leading to fresh state assembly elections.
Barisan Nasional won the elections by a landslide, taking 21 of the 28 seats. - FMT
