Dr M being cynical over ‘questioning’, says his office

The Pejuang chairman’s office said Dr Mahathir Mohamad was often questioned for his statements criticising the government prior to GE14.

PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad was merely being cynical when he suggested he might be hauled in by authorities for his recent remarks about the country’s justice system, his office clarified this evening.

In a statement, his office said Mahathir’s latest blog post had elicited various reactions, including from former prime minister Najib Razak.

These reactions – which subsequently forced the police to issue a statement that the Langkawi MP was not being probed – could have stemmed from not reading the blog post in its entirety or misreading it entirely, it said.

“The entire post was a cynical statement when read in full.”

However, it noted that the former prime minister had been questioned numerous times prior to the 14th general election (GE14) for criticising Putrajaya’s unjust administration. And this was what Mahathir had tried to convey in his latest post.

“The point is that those who are brave enough to speak out against injustice must be prepared to be intimidated, including being investigated.”

Last night, Mahathir said he expected to be hauled in by the authorities for questioning the justice system after noting that Najib, who had been convicted of corruption, had yet to spend a day in prison.

He compared his predecessor’s position with those convicted of minor offences who had been jailed immediately.

Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Abd Jalil Hassan later confirmed that Mahathir was not under investigation, and that he was last called in on March 23 to assist in the probe into the memoirs of former attorney-general Tommy Thomas. - FMT
