Fugitive businessman Nicky Liow surrenders to cops

Nicky Liow had been sought by police over alleged involvement in organised crime, such as fraud and money laundering.

PETALING JAYA: After a year of escaping the authorities, fugitive businessman Nicky Liow has surrendered to the police.

The 34-year-old was wanted by police over alleged involvement in organised crime such as fraud and money laundering.

In March last year,  police had hauled up 68 people believed to be members of Liow’s gang.

They also confiscated 16 luxury vehicles, including a Rolls Royce, as well as foreign currency totalling over RM7 million through 70 raids.

According to Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Kamarudin Md Din, Liow voluntarily surrendered himself to police at Bukit Aman around 11am today.

“Liow will be taken to the Shah Alam court tomorrow to face 26 charges under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act (AMLATFA) 2001,” Kamarudin said in a statement.

He said the CCID had received instructions from the attorney-general’s office to file charges against Liow on March 23.

The crackdown on Liow’s syndicate had also led to the arrest of two Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers and at least nine police officers linked to Liow. However, they were later released on bail.

Police said later that the founder of the Winner Dynasty Group was believed to be mentored by a Chinese national named Zhang Jiang and operated a call centre in Puchong, Selangor.

Police also investigated Liow’s ties with fugitive Chinese triad boss Wan Kouk Koi, also known as Broken Tooth. - FMT
