PETALING JAYA: Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has questioned whether tablet computers are to be provided as a gift or on loan to low-income university students.
“I thought they were giving out laptops, but it seems like they are only lending them out,” said Syed Saddiq on Twitter.
“It’s not a gift, but a loan. Students and parents are confused. The government has to be transparent for the sake of the students’ education,” said Syed Saddiq, who is president of the youth-based Muda party.
FMT has sought a response from communications and multimedia minister Annuar Musa and an aide.
In the 2022 federal budget announced in November, the government had promised to supply tablet computers to students from the B40 low-income group. About 400,000 are expected to benefit.
Annuar said yesterday that the tablets, which are expected to be distributed in the second week of June, must be returned once the students finish their studies.
On Thursday, he had said that details of the scheme would be announced after the finance ministry finalises the procurement of the equipment. He said the tender process would be completed next week.
“In any case, all questions that arise are indeed under consideration,” he said on Twitter. - FMT
